Was looking for service manuals and there seems to be a ton out there on 855 cummins engines. I've seen Big Cam books, and small cam books, and some for Big Cam 4 engines,Big cam 3's, which one would I have in the ST310 Steiger? Its a 76 model and the only thing I can gather off the serial plate is NT855,and what I think is mfg date of 1976. I want to retime the engine and want to make sure I'm timing it to correct specs. Among other maintenance. I cannot believe this thing holds 43 qts of engine oil! Gonna have to get me a Iraqie oil well for it! ![]() Was looking for service manuals and there seems to be a ton out there on 855 cummins engines. LOL A 1976 model it is probably a small cam--easy way to tell is on the left side of the engine--or fuel pump side you will see three covers--On a small cam they are about 3 to 3 1/2 inches tall--On a big cam they are about 5' tall--If you have the jig timing tool they are fairly simple--I know they used the small cam engine into the middle 80's on ag equiptment Or around that time--On road application they went to big cams in the late 70's--Check engine tag around the accessory drive and find the engine serial or cpl number and cummins could tell you for sure. Big cam 1--oil pump and piston coolers--Big cam 2 Pulse exhaust manifold was added--Big cam 3 I believe was an oil cooler change--Big cam 4 was low flow cooling system--this was Cummins attempt to stay away from air to air aftercooling which was a pain in the a$$ and they went to ATA anyway--All are very reliable--These were the good old day when you could play with the pump very easy--Now you still can but you have to trick the ecm. There should be a plate on top of the auxillery drive housing. This in on the left side of the engine. It has some important numbers on it. One of them is what Cummins calls a CP or a CL number. Find that and you can call a Cummins dealer and they can identify your engine. I would bet that if it is a 76 it is a small cam That would be my guess, I was with an outfit around the early eighties and the Big Cams were a fairly new thing in trucks (believe they might have been up to the Big Cam III at that time) The outfit I was working for had nothing but small cams and I'll bet they didn't get a Big Cam for about another ten years. Believe I would spend the extra dime a pay a 'cummins tech.' To run the overhead on your NT-855. There's more to it than a couple of wrenches screw driver and feeler gauges. If you have never run an overhead on an 855 then don't start now, it's something you need to do about every week to stay in practice.Along with some high dollar tools. Some of the timing adjustments are made by adding or removing shims/gaskets on the cam followers. One more thing, if it ain't broke.Don't break it. OK, I wasnt sure what all was involved in checking the timing. I dont think its starting as easy as it should, but some of that may be from an old battery on one side and the small new one on the other courtacy of DEERE,but does whirl fairly fast.
